<p>Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system has been employed very recently in India in order to overcome the delay at toll plazas usually experienced during Manual Toll Collection (MTC) operation. Thus, there is a need to have thresholds for ETC lane operations based on traffic volume approaching at toll plaza, usage of ETC lane in terms of rate, and delay experienced at toll lanes. Hence, the present study aims to develop thresholds for ETC lane operation using a microsimulation model. A total of 336 scenarios have been worked out by varying ETC penetration rates, approach volume and number of lanes in operation to obtain the delay values and thus the delay equation. Then, the Level of Service (LOS) thresholds are developed for ETC lanes considering delay. The traffic is mixed in India, and a single toll lane comprises different vehicle categories. Therefore, service headway-based toll equivalency factors (HTEF) are used in the present study, and LOS thresholds are given based on the delay experienced by every vehicle (HTEF). The LOS B threshold is used to develop the thresholds for lane operation based on approach volume and ETC penetration. The present study thresholds can be used for operating lanes in the field by field practitioners. </p>
