Study on rutting performance of synthetic zeolite based warm mix asphalt using railway carriage workshop incineration ash as filler

Technological advancements are happening worldwide daily, and the construction industry has seen some of the most extraordinary developments in the past decades. Notable achievements have been accomplished in flexible pavement design with higher load-carrying capacity and shortened construction time. Hot mix asphalt is used in most cases, which poses a challenge to environmental safety since the harmful gases released while preparing hot mix asphalt are hazardous. To counteract the problem, engineers have developed the application of warm mix asphalt via different methods that help to lower the mixing, compaction, and production temperature by 20–40 degrees Celsius. Synthetic zeolite has been used to enhance the performance and resistance against deformation of the asphalt. This study is a further step in reducing and reusing Railway Carriage Workshop Waste Incineration Ash in preparing warm mix asphalt with the addition of synthetic zeolites to achieve an optimum and environment-friendly asphalt mix. Various parameters were studied to determine the optimum mix incorporating the waste incineration ash in warm mix asphalt, such as the stability and volume of voids, rutting performance, and moisture susceptibility. At 130 °C, the WMA mix with 35% waste incineration ash and 0.3% synthetic zeolite content satisfied the minimum stability criteria and performed better than the control HMA mixes regarding rutting and moisture susceptibility.
