Reducing Environmental Footprint: Investigation of Waste Ceramic as a Valuable Resource in Brick Making

Changing from traditional materials like clay, sand, aggregates, and Portland cement to more sustainable options is a challenge for the construction material sector. This study aims to find out the viability of using ceramic waste in bricks as a partial replacement for cement. The utilization of ceramic waste was employed as a substitute for cement in varying proportions of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% in a standard mixture comprising fly ash, cement, and sand, to produce bricks. The study suggests that substituting 20% of ceramic waste powder (CWP) with Portland cement (PC) yields a compressive strength (11.20 N/mm2) greater than the strength of the control brick (10.75 N/mm2). With a ceramic waste content of 20%, the values of water absorption and porosity were observed to be below 20%, thus meeting the standard for moderate weathering resistance.
