Dynamic response mitigation of adjacent structures using clutched inerter

This paper aims to assess the effectiveness of clutched inerter in mitigating dynamic responses in two single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) structures. The study involves a comparative analysis of responses under harmonic and earthquake excitations for both interconnected and unconnected SDOF structures. Clutching effects are explored through a comparison of responses in SDOF structures equipped with clutched inerter featuring different inertance ratios, in contrast to those with simple inerter. The clutched inerter, unlike its simple counterpart that tends to amplify responses, introduces damping and effectively mitigates and controls the dynamic response in connected SDOF structures. Additionally, the seismic response of two adjacent multi-story buildings, interconnected by clutched inerters, is also investigated under realistic earthquake excitations. The study derives and numerically integrates the governing equations of motion for seismic response analysis. The research also evaluates three distinct clutched inerter placement strategies, all with the same inertance, to determine their effectiveness in reducing seismic responses in adjacent buildings. The findings underscore the potential of clutched inerter as an effective strategy for controlling seismic responses in dissimilar adjacent buildings, provided appropriate inertance and placement are selected.
