Experimental and analytical study on the potential of reusing waste plastic straps as a replacement for conventional steel stirrups in normal reinforced beams

摘要

The production of steel bars affects the environment negatively along with plastic’s deposition into the environment. This research is an attempt to replace the beams’ steel stirrups, with plastic strips retrieved from industrial wastes. For this purpose, five \(1200 {\text{mm}}\times 200 {\text{mm}}\times 100 {\text{mm}}\) 1200 mm × 200 mm × 100 mm beams were cast and tested with a four-point loading test at the age of 28 days. One of the beams was the control beam with no stirrups, while three beams had two, four, and six plastic stirrups in most critical sections only along with a beam with steel stirrups for comparison. The results showed that plastic strips increase the loading capacity, maximum deformation, and the load at which first the shear crack developed when compared to the control beam. The loading carrying capacity increases by 18.30% and 12.23% when two and four plastic stirrups are used, respectively. Also, the failure of the beam shifted from a brittle failure to a ductile failure with the addition of plastic stirrups. It is found that plastic strips can perform as good as steel stirrups if used with the same spacing as it is the decisive factor in the type of failure.
