The Happy Heart: Relations Between Dispositional Self-Location and Well-Being
摘要
The head and heart regions of the body are frequently chosen when individuals are asked to locate themselves within their bodies and the head and the heart are also linked to an extensive set of conceptual metaphors and folk theories. Perceiving oneself to be located in one region of the body or the other could therefore matter with respect to how one lives one’s life. In two studies (total N = 431), participants were asked whether they perceived themselves to be located in the brain (or head, in Study 2), the heart, or somewhere in between when performing a variety of daily activities. Self-locations favoring the heart were linked to PERMA pathways involving positive affect, relationships, and meaning (Study 1) as well as to emotional awareness and happiness in daily life (Study 2). If the heart is authentic, spontaneous, and socially connected, perceiving self to exist in the heart would seem to have value.
