A Qualitative Approach to Students’ Experiences of Character Strengths
摘要
For many, postsecondary study is a unique period characterized by the achievement of important developmental milestones in the context of novel stressors and challenges (e.g., peer relationships, finances) and there are concerning levels of mental health issues within postsecondary student populations. Thus, there is a growing need to identify contributors to student well-being, such as character strengths. This study aimed to examine character strengths as they have been theoretically understood, as constellations, in a sample of postsecondary students. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to explore the lived experiences of students’ character strengths and how their character strengths impact their daily lives. Researchers identified four themes: Strengths Concepts, Source of Strengths, Use of Strengths, and Impact of Strengths. Descriptions of strengths aligned with character strengths theory and research yet suggested increased nuance in students’ experiences of strengths not captured within current character strengths frameworks. Findings inform both theoretical conceptualizations of character strengths and potential avenues of support for postsecondary students.
