Damage assessment and retrofitting strategies used in different low- and mid-rise buildings after the 26 November 2019 Durrës earthquake

This research study investigates the damage patterns, seismic performance, and retrofitting strategies applied to various building after the 2019 Durrës earthquake, which caused widespread damage and significantly compromised the seismic capacities of many buildings. Retrofitting strategies are proposed in accordance with the structural characteristics and observed damage patterns of the buildings. These strategies were chosen by analysing commonly used intervention techniques, such as masonry wall upgrades, concrete shear walls, steel frames, concrete and steel jacketing, and fibre-reinforced polymers. First, the damage patterns in a number of case studies and other similar units were investigated. Then, through the nonlinear structural models that incorporate material properties and structural element capacities obtained from both on-site and laboratory tests, the seismic performance of the structures towards both the 26 November 2019 earthquake and the code base response spectra was assessed. The consistency between the failure mechanisms observed in the structural models and the damage patterns found in the buildings provided a satisfactory level of confidence for the assessment. Subsequently, retrofitting strategies are proposed and implemented to enhance the capacity and to improve resilience. Performance assessments show that the proposed interventions adequately increased seismic capacities at a moderate cost. Specific aspects such infill effect on RC columns, effect of soil structure interaction are presented as well.
