Effect of parent concrete’s properties on compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete
摘要
Concrete is widely used construction material and the growing accumulation of concrete waste poses significant environmental challenges which necessitates recycling and reuse of those waste concrete for sustainability. Unlike global studies mostly focused on recycled stone aggregates, this research investigated recycled concrete having brick chips. This study delved into two objectives, first was to evaluate the optimal replacement level of normal brick aggregates (NBA) by recycled brick aggregate (RBA) considering compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) and the second was to examine the effect of the parent concrete’s (from where recycled brick aggregates were derived) water-cement ratio on the resulting RAC’s compressive strength. A comprehensive experimental program was designed to prepare parent concretes, from where recycled brick aggregates (RBA) were derived, followed by construction of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) specimens with various percentages (i.e., 10%, 20%, 40% and 50%) of replacement of recycled brick aggregate (RBA). The experimentally obtained results showed that the optimal replacement percentage of recycled brick aggregate was 20% mostly. In addition, when water-cement ratio of parent concrete matched the water-cement ratio of the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), the resulting recycled aggregate concrete exhibited a lower compressive strength.
