Evaluation of drainage characteristics of coir geotextile reinforced roads
摘要
Efficient drainage of infiltrated water is crucial for flexible pavement longevity and serviceability, as water accumulation leads to early failure. This study evaluates coir geotextile’s dual function as a drainage layer and reinforcement through laboratory testing using constant head permeability and static plate load tests in a steel tank setup. Two woven coir grid-type geotextiles (400 g/m² and 700 g/m²) were investigated at the GSB-Subgrade interface. Laboratory results demonstrated significant improvements in both drainage and structural characteristics of the road sections. Furthermore, a test road constructed with embedded coir geotextile showed reduced rutting, attributed to the synergistic effect of improved drainage and reinforcement. The lighter geotextile (400 g/m²) exhibited superior drainage performance due to larger aperture size, achieving an enhanced overall drainage capacity of 30 mm/hr compared to 27 mm/hr for the 700 g/m² variant and 22.5 mm/hr for unreinforced sections. However, the heavier geotextile (700 g/m²) demonstrated better structural performance owing to its higher tensile strength and mass density.
