Comparative evaluation of open graded friction course and stone matrix asphalt mixtures with modified binders and warm mix asphalt

This article presents a comprehensive study on the evaluation of the performance of modified binders and Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) in Open-Graded Friction Course (OGFC) and Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA) mixtures. The goal of the research is to enhance the longevity of asphalt pavements as well as their resistance to rutting and environmental conditions. In addition to the use of cellulose Fibre as a stabiliser and hydrated lime as a filler and anti-stripping agent, a total of five distinct binders, including plain bitumen, polymer-modified binder (PMB-40), crumb rubber-modified binder (CRMB-55), and WMA-E and WMA-Z (produced by adding Evotherm and Zycotherm additives in PMB-40), have been utilised. The study sheds light on the efficiency of these binders in the production of high-quality OGFC and SMA mixes and compares their performance with that of traditional asphalt. The mixtures’ resistance to rutting and durability is evaluated by a series of performance tests that are part of the laboratory examination. Pavement performance in terms of pavement stiffness, moisture susceptibility, elasticity property, permanent deformation, and rut depth of mixtures is measured. The results show the implementation of modified binders and WMA technology in OGFC and SMA mixtures in cost-effective solutions for high-volume road networks.
