Unveiling the Hidden Nutritional Impact of Urban Drinking Water: A Case Study from Fars Province, Iran

Access to healthy drinking water is a key indicator of development. This study assesses the contribution of drinking water to nutrient intake in Fars Province, Iran, using the Drinking Water Nutritional Quality Index (DWNQI). According to the DWNQI, 3.45%, 24.14%, 58.62%, and 13.79% of the study area were classified as good, relatively good, relatively poor, and poor, respectively. The lowest DWNQI values (35.53–53.33) are observed in the southern regions, where fluoride and magnesium contributions are high, but contributions from other elements are low. Overall, the nutritional quality of drinking water in the province is classified as relatively poor. A substantial discrepancy exists between the DWNQI and conventional drinking water quality indices (DWQI, AWQI, HWQI), highlighting the need to incorporate nutritional value into water quality assessments. The DWNQI can serve as a practical tool for selecting nutritionally adequate raw water sources, guiding remineralization strategies after desalination, and ranking bottled mineral waters.
