Performance Evaluation of Green Concrete Incorporating Saudi Natural Pozzolana: State-of-the-Art

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the utilization of Saudi natural pozzolana (NP) as a supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in sustainable concrete. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, around 40 experimental local studies were synthesized to evaluate Arabian based NP’s influence on fresh, mechanical, and durability properties. Results show that NP incorporation reduces heat of hydration and enhances long-term strength and durability, particularly at low to moderate replacement levels (≤ 20%). Higher dosages (≥ 30%) generally lower early-age strength but can be optimized through extended curing or blending with other SCMs such as silica fume or nano-silica. Quantitative analysis of compressive strength ratios confirms parity with control mixes by 28–90 days under optimized conditions. Durability improvements include reduced porosity, lower water absorption, and enhanced resistance to chloride and sulfate attack, with emerging evidence for favorable carbonation and post-fire performance. A critical discussion compares NP with other SCMs, highlights economic feasibility through life-cycle cost benefits, and evaluates compliance with ASTM, ACI, and EN standards. The review identifies research gaps in field applications, variability of NP sources, and standardization needs. Overall, Saudi NP shows strong potential to advance sustainable, durable, and low-carbon concrete in alignment with Vision 2030.
