Scour Depth Mysteries: Unraveling the Effects of Cylindrical Stepped Weirs

Many studies have been made to reduce the scour depth downstream of weirs by amending design features such as the slope of the structure, step shape, length, and height as well as adding partitions, thresholds, or protective floor. In the current study, a stepped weir investigated by 54 experiments were conducted on 12 models of weirs with three diameters (2.5, 5, 7.5) cm. 9 models of cylindrical stepped weirs with three types of steps weir (1. all steps are cylindrical without cutting, Cw), (2. all steps are cut Scw), (3. one step is complete and the other is cut Cw & Scw). 3 models of rectangular stepped weirs with the same dimensions. The results demonstrated that increasing the step diameter reduced the scour depth, with the combined shape (Cw&Scw) performing better than the single form (Scw), while the circular weir (Cw) proved to be the most effective form. Cylindrical stepped weirs are better than stepped weirs, as they reduce the depth of scour by a percentage (72.72%).
