<p>Ductile cast iron (DCI) offers excellent mechanical properties that can be tailored over a wide range by adjusting the microstructure, making DCI a widely used structural material, especially for large components. Many industrial applications require not only high strength but also sufficient ductility. If the minimum standard requirements are not met, then structural components are rejected and remelted, dramatically increasing manufacturing costs. In order to avoid such problems in the future and to improve the efficiency and sustainability of production, this study investigates the applicability of a spheroidization heat treatment as a post-casting modification of the mechanical properties of high-strength pearlitic cast iron. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the effect of pearlite spheroidization, its effect on both static and cyclic mechanical properties was investigated. The results show that heat treatment at 700&#xa0;°C combined with a holding time of 6 h results in a decrease in static strength but a significant increase in elongation at fracture. Interestingly, an improvement in fatigue strength was also observed, partly due to the beneficial effects of heat treatment on microshrinkage porosity.</p>
