The current discussions in the education sector about ChatGPT point to the increasing relevance of generative AI in the field of (educational) counselling. Although avatar-supported information consultations are already a reality, possible applications of AI-supported technologies are the subject of lively debate, yet many ethical issues remain unmentioned. The aim of this article is to address the ethical queries surrounding the use of AI-supported tools in (educational) counselling settings after clarifying the current state of affairs. To this end, the counselling process and its normative dimension are clarified. By focusing on the different levels of counselling, the article drafts possible consequences and criteria for the use of AI in the context of (continuing) educational counselling.
