Spatial Analysis of Global Burden of Ovarian Cancer Based on GBD Study 2021

Ovarian cancer (OC) poses a significant worldwide health issue for women, standing as one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. In recent decades, the trends in incidence and prevalence of this disease have shown significant differences across various regions. This study aims to provide a detailed analysis of OC hotspots.
MethodsWe obtained the age-standardized rates of incidence (ASIR), mortality (ASDR), prevalence (ASPR), and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs ASR) related to OC from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) 2021. After importing the data into the GIS software, high-risk areas were drawn using the analysis of hot spots (Getis-Ord Gi). Hot spots and cold spots were classified based on the standard deviation of the z-scores. Countries with z-scores lower than − 2.58, − 2.58 to − 1.96, and − 1.96 to − 1.64 were categorized as very strong, strong, and moderate cold spots, respectively. Countries with z-scores between + 1.64 to + 1.96, + 1.96 to + 2.58, and greater than + 2.58 were classified as moderate, strong, and very strong hot spots, respectively.
ResultsThe ASIR, ASDR, ASPR, and DALYs ASR of OC were reported as 6.71, 4.06, 28.08, and 115.15 per 100,000 population, respectively. Age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) Map of OC shows that certain regions, particularly in Africa, Europe, Asia and parts of America, have significant variations in disease incidence. High age-standardized death rates (ASDR) are concentrated in Africa, Europe, Asia and the United Arab Emirates. The age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR) map highlights significant hotspots in Asia, the Americas, and parts of Africa and Europe where prevalence rates are particularly high. The DALY ASR map reveals a concentrated burden of disease in Comoros, where DALY values were elevated.
ConclusionThe worldwide impact of OC is not evenly shared, exhibiting notable differences in incidence, prevalence, mortality and DALY across regions. Grasping the underlying elements, including socio-demographic indicators, reproductive and lifestyle influences, and healthcare availability, is vital for creating successful plans to alleviate the global impact of OC.
