A Study to Assess the Perception of Body Image and Self-Esteem Among Patients with Gynaecological Cancer at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Bangalore
摘要
This study aimed to assess body image perception and self-esteem among gynaecological cancer patients, evaluate their relationship, and identify associations with demographic and clinical variables.
MethodsA descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 83 gynaecological cancer patients selected through purposive sampling at St. John’s Medical College Hospital, Bangalore. Data were collected using a structured pro forma, body image scale , and rosenberg self-esteem scale. Descriptive statistics characterized the demographic profile, while inferential statistics determined relationships and associations.
ResultsMost participants were middle-aged (53%), married (91.6%), Hindu (67.5%), and diagnosed with ovarian cancer (36.1%) within the past year (77.1%). The median body image disturbance score was 5 (IQR 3.5–10.5), indicating significant concerns. The mean self-esteem score was 19.4 ± 5.19, with 66.26% having moderate self-esteem. A strong negative correlation was found between body image disturbance and self-esteem (r = − 0.74, p < 0.001). Body image disturbance was significantly associated with age (p = 0.025) and illness duration (p = 0.001), while self-esteem was associated with occupation (p = 0.026), residence (p = 0.026), and illness duration (p = 0.001).
ConclusionGynaecological cancer patients experience significant body image disturbances that negatively correlate with self-esteem. These findings emphasize the need for empowerment programmes to enhance psychological resilience by addressing body image and self-esteem concerns, particularly for newly diagnosed and middle-aged patients.
