Purpose <p>Cervical cancer is by far the most common human papilloma virus (HPV)-related disease. To protect women from cervical cancer, the World Health Organization recommends women aged 35–45 be screened using tests that detect human papillomavirus (HPV). For countries with the highest disease burden, especially low- and middle-income nations, it is essential to understand their unique challenges and identify ways to enable these regions to benefit from innovative screening technologies currently available in wealthier countries.</p> Methods <p>The literature search was performed using electronic databases Scopus, Medline (PubMed), EMBASE, and CENTRAL. A general search string was performed using the words cervical cancer, HPV, self-sampling, and participation in screening.</p> Results <p>National policymakers recognize the advantages of HPV testing, including its superior sensitivity and the potential benefits of using self-collected samples. For ministry of health leaders, evidence demonstrating the performance, safety, and cost-effectiveness of HPV testing, along with details on expected costs for training personnel, acquiring supplies, providing facility space, and maintaining test kits, must be made available.</p> Conclusion <p>Despite existing challenges, a collaborative effort between global and national stakeholders to implement molecular screening methods could offer better protection to women who need it most.</p>
