Expression of Candidate Gene NDUFS1 in Breast Cancer: An in-silico Approach

摘要

Purpose

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of malignancy in females. Exploring new biomarkers is essential for the prognosis of breast cancer to reduce its mortality rate and incidence among women worldwide. An increase in studies on nuclear DNA implies that changes in genes encoded by nuclear DNA result in an imbalance in the homeostasis of the mitochondria, indicating that communication between the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes plays a significant role in the biology of breast cancer.

Methods

Several nuclear DNA-encoded and mitochondrial genes were examined. The 20 hub genes related to breast cancer were identified from the Protein Association Network. The statistical correlation of key genes was validated with data obtained from TCGA—The Cancer Genome Atlas, breast cancer samples. Further, the expression of these genes was analyzed with the help of bioinformatics tools, to validate its prognostic effect.

Results

The outcome of the study shows that among the filtered hub genes, NDUFS1-NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit S1 gene plays major role in different biological pathways and has role in the breast cancer progression.

Conclusion

NDUFS1-NADH: ubiquinone oxidoreductase core subunit S1 gene had significant role in modulating the expression in breast cancer; hence, it can serve as a candidate biomarker for prognosis and treatment.
