摘要

Dignity as an empirical variable poses a challenge to the epistemic grounds of the social sciences. The study of dignity entails an ontological and epistemological adherence to moral realism, but the vast majority of work in social science and management field, study it in managerial and positivist forms which tend to favour measurement over meaning, and prediction over understanding. Through observations from phenomenology and critical realism, this study uses the current examples of workplace indignity among young professionals in the Indian corporate world to question the social scientific approaches to knowledge which conceptualize and measure human value in the organization. It is understood that organizations through dominant management practices such as 1) Psychological Abuse and Identity Devaluation 2) Feudal Autocracy and Forced work compliances 3) Institutional Failures and Complicity, eliminate personhood and create epistemological problems. This study suggests that a moral phenomenology of work is needed, which reinstates dignity as a state of, rather than a result of, social scientific knowledge.
