Theoretical Analysis for Sand Tubes for Constructing Working Platform on Soft Soil

One challenge in treating the soft soil in land reclamation is that its top surface is too soft for machines to rest on during the installation of PVDs (Prefabricated Vertical Drains). An alternative solution to figure out this issue is the formation of a working platform. One such method was proposed by Broms, which involves the use of geotextile and sand berms. In this method, several sand berms with specific dimensions and spacing are placed on top of the geotextile to stabilize the working platform. To overcome the uncertainties in the design and construction of the working platform using Broms’ method, a modified approach using sand tubes and geotextile is proposed. Here, to address uncertainties in the dimensions of sand tube, a new analytical solution is developed to analyse its geometry, which depends on factors such as pumping pressure, the perimeter and spacing of the geotextile tubes, and the tensile stiffness of the geotextile. Parametric studies are conducted to identify the key parameters affecting the geometry of the sand tubes. Additionally, design charts for various conditions using the modified Broms’ method are also developed and applied in a case study.
