<p>A global objective for lowering carbon emissions related to the transportation industry is deploying electric vehicles (EVs). Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are the two vehicle types that can be used in the transportation sector to achieve sustainable mobility. Although EVs don’t release any pollutants when they’re in use, their overall environmental advantages depend on the electricity used to charge them; compared to fossil fuels, renewable energy sources offer the most significant reduction in emissions. EVs have the potential to drastically cut both fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions when operated by battery technology. India is one of several countries that supports the global transportation electrification movement. The Government of India (GoI) has set up various policies to promote the implementation of EVs and has also put up several initiatives to develop EV charging infrastructure. However, for its on-ground implementation to be supported, global standards must be altered to fit the Indian transportation environment. This study primarily addresses the technological, infrastructural, financial, and policy barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India. By examining national and international EV regulations, market trends, and technological advancements, this article provides evidence-based recommendations for accelerating EV adoption. The findings emphasize the importance of locally tailored solutions, including consumer awareness campaigns, cost-reduction strategies, and infrastructure development. This paper also describes how EV research and development are progressing in India. This study aims to support Indian policymakers, the government, and businesses in promoting EV adoption to lower emissions and minimize carbon footprints. It is necessary to establish efficient policies for handling up-front investment expenses, promoting the growth of electric vehicle charging infrastructures, and assuring that the demand for charging is integrated into power networks. The framework for EV adoption has already been established in many countries, and electric mobility will likely become a far more sustainable choice for road transportation in the upcoming years.</p>
