Abstract <p>Angiogenes is the term used to denote the formation of new blood capillaries from the pre-existing blood vessels. It is an important process during tissue repair and regeneration, but excessive angiogenesis can result in tumor formation. Tumor tissues are characterized by quick proliferation, rapid metabolism and increased requirement of oxygen and nutrients. Tumor angiogenesis serves as one of the most important stages of cancer progression. Suppression of angiogenic factors will play a significant role in treating diseases that are caused due to uncontrolled vascularization. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)/VEGF receptor 2 signaling pathway is recognized as the most crucial factor that is involved in controlling almost all phases of physiological angiogenesis. Angiogenic inhibitors inhibit different growth factors and receptors that play crucial role in inducing angiogenesis. This review gives information about angiogenesis, its mechanism and various growth factors that are involved in the process. The different inhibitors of angiogenesis and the role of anti-angiogenic therapy in cancer treatment are also discussed.</p> Lay Summary <p>Angiogenesis is a multifaceted biological process that is crucial for the regeneration of tissues and organs.
