Abstract <p>Cell-mediated drug delivery is considered a promising therapeutic strategy designed to increase the efficacy of pharmacological materials and minimize their toxicity. This review demonstrates the potential use of different cells such as erythrocytes, platelets, immune cells, and stem cells as delivery systems for different pharmacological drugs, such as chemotherapeutic drugs, into their final destination within the body by discussing their main properties and features that make them suitable to be used as drug delivery systems, in addition to their role in overcoming all the challenges associated with the conventional drug delivery methods, such as their retention time and bioavailability. Hence, this review intends to provide valuable insights into the probable applications and implications of cell-mediated drug delivery in improving therapeutic outcomes in various clinical settings. Lay Summary. Cell-mediated drug delivery is a novel strategy to increase medication efficacy while lowering negative side effects. This article summarizes how different cell types—including red blood cells, platelets, immune cells, and stem cells—can be employed to deliver medications, such as chemotherapy treatments, to particular body parts.
