This study aims to explore the significance of Bruch’s membrane in retinal health, focusing on its role as a barrier and exchange interface between the retina and the choroid. Diseases like age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy negatively affect Bruch’s membrane, leading to severe vision issues. The primary research question addresses how advancements in organ-on-chip technology can improve the understanding and treatment of these conditions.
MethodsA bibliometric analysis was conducted using data from the Scopus database. Bibliometric tools, particularly VOSviewer, were utilized to examine research trends, geographical distribution, journal contributions, and keyword co-occurrences in studies related to Bruch’s membrane on a chip.
ResultsThe analysis revealed an increasing interest and collaborative focus on the development of organ-on-chip models for studying retinal diseases. Key areas of research, prolific researchers, influential institutions, and emerging trends were identified, highlighting the substantial contributions from interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at advancing retinal health.
ConclusionThis review underscores the importance of innovative technologies, such as organ-on-chip systems, in advancing the understanding and potential treatment options for retinal diseases. The findings indicate that such interdisciplinary approaches are essential for future breakthroughs in retinal health, with growing efforts concentrated on studying and potentially treating retinal disorders through cutting-edge biomimetic technologies.
