Integrin Targeting: An Intelligent Approach in Articular Cartilage Tissue Engineering

Despite the progress in therapeutic approaches, treating damaged cartilage remains an unsolved problem. Tissue engineering − based strategies as an alternative and promising method have been under attention for a long time. One of the important topics in tissue engineering is the correct and intelligent selection of biomaterials and the goal to follow in the application of biomaterials. Adhesion molecules are vital in cell behavior such as cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Integrins, as the main adhesion molecules connecting cells to the extracellular matrix, have always been considered a potential target in cartilage tissue engineering. Knowing their role in the formation and regeneration of cartilage, as well as the types that have a direct role in cartilage regeneration, helps to discover the methods of repairing damaged cartilage. This article aims to review the studies done in this field. Also, in this article, the types of biomaterials that have been used to target integrins for the purpose of cartilage tissue engineering have been investigated. Lay Summary. Targeting integrins is a method employed to direct the behavior of cells to a specific path such as proliferation or differentiation. Integrins are adhesion molecules that allow cells to interact with their surroundings and coordinate their behavior with the structure and architecture of the surrounding environment. The cartilage tissue is one of the tissues whose function and behavior are largely dependent on the structure of the extracellular material. For this reason, in cartilage tissue engineering, many efforts are focused on using biomaterials that connect well to stem cells or chondrocytes and modulate their behavior to repair cartilage damage.
