摘要

Gazania spp. and Pelargonium spp. are well known for their horticultural uses, with several species and hybrids widely cultivated as ornamental plants. In Turkey, they represent a noteworthy component of the ornamental plant market, contributing significantly to the economy. However, viral diseases often lead to symptoms resulting in significant aesthetic and economic losses. Moreover, when ornamental plants are used as propagation material, they can serve as inoculum sources, facilitating the undetected spread of viruses within and between countries. In this study, a total of 60 symptomatic Gazania spp. and 50 Pelargonium spp. plants exhibiting virus-like symptoms such as mosaic, mottling, leaf deformation, chlorotic spots, and ring patterns were collected from various locations in Turkey to investigate possible viral infections. Total RNA was extracted from the samples, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed using virus-specific primers. In this study, we report for the first time the natural occurrence of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV, Cucumovirus CMV) and lettuce mosaic virus (LMV, Potyvirus lactucae) infecting Gazania spp., as well as the presence of pelargonium flower break virus (PFBV, Alphacarmovirus pelargonii) in Pelargonium spp. in Turkey.
