Biological nematicides applied as seed treatment to control Meloidogyne javanica in wheat

Wheat crops have been an alternative in crop rotation in the Brazilian Cerrado region that can be used to manage Meloidogyne javanica, associated with biological nematicides. Little information is available regarding the interaction between biological nematicides and wheat crops as a rotation in the management of M. javanica. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different commercial biological nematicides applied as seed treatment on one susceptible wheat cultivar IPR Catuara for M. javanica control. The penetration of M. javanica juveniles and the reproduction of the nematode were evaluated in the plant roots. The plant development was also assessed. The treatments were Bacillus firmus, Bacillus subtilis + Bacillus licheniformis, B. subtilis, Pochonia chlamydosporia, Purpureocillium lilacinum, Trichoderma harzianum, and two controls: no seed treatment with nematicides and no nematode inoculation. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six and seven repetitions for nematode penetration and multiplication tests, respectively. Five days after sowing, 2,000 eggs of nematodes were pipetted around roots and at 10 days after inoculation the juveniles were quantified. All treatments, except for B. firmus, presented fewer nematodes than the control. At 60 and 69 days after inoculation the treatments that showed lower multiplication of the nematode were T. harzianum and B. subtilis + B. licheniformis. T. harzianum also provided better plant development. The potential of the biological agents used here in the management of M. javanica increase the possibility of successful management of M. javanica in infested fields.
