Seasonal variations of plant-parasitic nematodes associated with citrus in the Marrakech-Safi region of Morocco

The effects of seasonality and land management practices on the distribution of plants parasitic nematodes (PPN) in citrus and on soil characteristics were studied in three citrus orchard sites (Graoua domain, Benkebboura domain and Arsat Moulay Abdeslam) with different cultural practices in the Marrakech-Safi region. The population density of PPN as well as, soil moisture, and soil content were seasonally recorded. Results showed that PPN were most abundant in spring at the Graoua domain, followed by the Benkebboura domain and Arsat Moulay Abdeslam. Within the PPN, a diverse range of 18 genera and 6 species were identified in association with citrus across these three sites. T. semipenetrans, Helicotylenchus spp., and Xiphinema spp. were found in all seasons and across all sites, with T. semipenetrans being especially prevalent in spring. Seasonality and agricultural management influenced the amount of soil organic matter, nutrients as well as soil moisture leading to observable statistical differences in the density of plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) across three distinct agricultural sites. A close correlation was also observed between the dynamics of the PPN, the seasons, and the soil properties. This underscores the intricate relationship between biotic (PPN), abiotic (soil characteristics), and human (agricultural management practices) factors in shaping the distribution of PPN in agricultural landscapes. Understanding these relationships is crucial for developing effective and sustainable strategies for managing PPN in agricultural settings.
