An overview of pistachio gummosis: a comprehensive analysis

Root and crown rot has emerged as a critical challenge to global pistachio production, with increasing incidence reported in major cultivation regions such as Iran, California and Arizona. This destructive disease, caused by various Phytophthora species, affects pistachio trees across all developmental stages, potentially leading to rapid decline and mortality. The pathogen proliferates in saturated soil conditions, particularly in orchards characterized by inadequate drainage or excessive irrigation practices. The disease manifests through a constellation of symptoms, including diminished tree vigor, chlorosis, premature defoliation, gummosis at the tree base, and necrotic discoloration of the rootstock cambium. As pistachio cultivation expands into marginal soils with poor water infiltration, the prevalence of Phytophthora infections has correspondingly increased, elevating concerns within the international pistachio industry. Management strategies for Phytophthora in pistachio orchards encompass a multifaceted approach. Proper water management is paramount, involving the implementation of efficient irrigation systems and improved drainage techniques. Site selection plays a crucial role, with emphasis on well-drained locations to mitigate disease risk. The utilization of resistant rootstocks, such as Qazvini, Badami Riz Zarand and Platinum varieties, has shown promise in enhancing tree resilience against Phytophthora infections. Additionally, chemical interventions, including the application of fosetyl-al and phosphites, may be incorporated into integrated management programs. Recent research has focused on evaluating rootstock tolerance, with studies demonstrating the superior performance of Platinum rootstock in resisting Phytophthora infections compared to UCB1 and PG1 varieties. This emerging body of knowledge underscores the importance of informed rootstock selection in disease management strategies for pistachio cultivation.
