摘要

This acoustic investigation aims to shed light on the whistle characteristics of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Eastern Arabian Sea, an area experiencing increased maritime activity. The study analyses five whistle contour types, comparing their acoustic parameters during data collection periods between November 2020 and May 2021 using the Deepwater Ambient Noise Measurement System (DANMS), both with and without ship noise. Ships' presence caused signs of altered acoustic behaviour of dolphins to shift the frequencies of their whistles to higher ranges and to lengthen their duration, with a noticeable reduction in complexity. Statistical analyses confirmed the significant effects of maritime activity on the whistle characteristics of bottlenose dolphins. These findings highlight the need for ambient noise monitoring at this site to further understand and address the impact of ship noise on these dolphins.
