摘要

This paper is a thought-piece. It responds to a 2002 paper that explored options for inclusion of mātauranga Māori alongside familiar science ‘content’ within Aotearoa New Zealand’s science curriculum. The paper notes the seeming lack of progress in addressing the challenges raised in 2002 and asks what now could be done differently. What might support teachers’ perceptions that inclusion of indigenous knowledge in a science curriculum could be a plausible and desirable development? This question is addressed via a series of five waystations. These waystations develop sequentially towards an answer that prioritises ‘citizenship’ purposes for learning science, and draws on our recent work in developing a ‘knowledge systems’ approach to rethinking science curriculum development for this century.
