<p>The land use transformation is a common trend worldwide, especially from traditional agricultural to modern agricultural and other non-agricultural land uses. In India, about 42.8% of the geographical area is under cultivation, whereas in West Bengal, the share is roughly 62%; yet the land use/land cover-based analysis and forecasting of the ongoing conversion from cultivation land to floriculture in the state’s coastal plains remain underexplored. Thus, the present study intends to examine the floricultural development in the Purba Medinipur district (Kolaghat and Panskura community development blocks) during 1990–2020 using Landsat images, field surveys, and entropy-based models. The results indicate the rapid transformation of the paddy field to floricultural land with an increase in the percentage of floricultural farmers. The rapid floricultural expansion is also detected for the study blocks for 2030 and 2040 through the Markov chain model. The village-level transformation is examined in terms of marigold, rose, tuberose, and tube belly. The major driver for this transformation is the higher return from the floriculture (INR 4000–15000). However, the cost-benefit varies from one flower to another. This transformation is helpful for the development of the local economy, especially in the face of recurrent hazards-induced losses in the traditional agriculture (e.g. paddy) in the coastal district. The study bears a significant facet for developing a sustainable plan for the concerned regions and other similar regions of the world.</p>
