Urban expansion and its environmental impacts in northwestern Algeria using cellular automata-Markov-chain modeling

Land use and land cover (LULC) in the Oued Fekan Watershed, Northwestern Algeria has undergone remarkable due to change under conditions of rapid socio-economic development and urban expansion. These changes have led to significant challenges related to land degradation and environmental sustainability. This study aims to analyze and forecast LULC changes from 2001 to 2021 and project future scenarios for 2051, analyzing the underlying processes driving these transformations. Using Landsat satellite imagery and Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) within the Cellular Automata-Markov Chain (CA-MC) model, the study examines changes in: built-up areas, forests, agricultural land, shrublands, grasslands, and barren land. It comes out that the built up area had increased unbelievably to about 617% from a mere 22 km2 in 2001 to 162 km2 by 2021 indicating further and measures advancement. However, this growth has come at the expense of natural landscapes, with forest and cropland areas declining by 8% and 40%, respectively, threatening ecological stability. Projections for 2051 suggest that built-up areas and shrublands will continue expanding, increasing by 23.30% and 2.74%, respectively. In contrast, forest cover and grasslands are expected to decline by 14.27% and 5.48%, further exacerbating environmental concerns. This study underscores the urgent need for policies that promote efficient land management to mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization on the environment. Additionally, it highlights the importance of integrating sustainable land-use planning strategies to balance development with ecological preservation at the local level.
