Calculus in Engineering Programmes: Issues Related to Content, Student Persistence, and the Use of Applications

In many engineering programmes worldwide, nearly every course lists calculus as a direct or an indirect prerequisite. For this reason, besides its importance, calculus is often seen as a significant barrier to student success in engineering. High failure and withdrawal rates in calculus courses contribute to attrition in engineering. For these reasons, the role of calculus in engineering has been scrutinised. In this paper, we review literature from mathematics and engineering education related to three themes: (1) issues related to student retention and equity in calculus courses in engineering; (2) the use of differentials in engineering practice; (3) interventions that leverage applications to improve learning outcomes in calculus for engineers. We conclude discussing some connections between these three themes and identifying some topics for future research.
