Photovoice was used as a participatory research methodology. 摘要

Photovoice is a powerful participatory methodology capable of activating social and personal skills and promoting the participation of people with people with disabilities. “The Lens of Change”, an activity based on this methodology, aims to give users of an organization in Portugal a voice to boost and increase their participation in identifying and analyzing the characteristics of the institutional life that can be strengthened or improved, with order to a process of change. Photovoice was used as a participatory research methodology. There were 41 participants with multiple disabilities and diverse mobility functionality, 59% women (n = 24), and 41% men (n = 17), aged between 20 and 64 years old. Focus groups were organized to discuss the images, highlighting positive aspects and improvements. A categorical content analysis of the focus group records was carried out. The most positive aspects identified by the participants were the natural landscape surrounding the institution (the farm), the activities developed in the different social care services, and the therapeutic interactions with the horses. The aspects they would like to see improved were mainly the physical conditions of the institution. The Photovoice was a means for the participants to have a voice and be heard by enabling them to identify priority areas of intervention to be changed with the institution’s leaders and local authorities, having already started this process of change regarding the accessibility of the space.
