摘要

The promotion of mental health for those who have mental disorders is a challenge for nurses working over the globe. Salutogenesis offers a novel design that facilitates quicker development towards improved health. There are only few studies on salutogenic approach mental health nursing, however in Indian context, there is no any available literature on Salutogenic mental health promotion by nurse in psychiatry hospital. Hence the study is aimed to determine the effect of Salutogenic approach to promote mental health and well-being among clients with mental illness. Quasi Experimental Non Randomized Control group pre-test -post -test design was adopted. The study included 41 patients of which 21 in Experimental group and 20 in Control group. The data was collected using Mental Health Continuum short form (MHC-SF) developed by Keyes (Brief description of the mental health continuum-shortform (MHC-SF). available at http://www.sociology.emory.edu/ckeyes 2009). The salutogenic intervention was given for 12 days with 10 sessions and data was collected at 3 time point ie at baseline(1st day of admission), post test (at the end of 12th day), follow up at discharge(14–15th day). The baseline score of mental health and well-being among experimental and control group were similar. The post test score and 1st follow up score of mental health and well-being showed significant improvement in Experimental group than control group (p < 0.05). Experimental group had highly significant mean difference in Mental health continuum score at baseline (12.36) with post test (21.29) and follow up (25.6) measures in comparison to control group (F = 14.34). Nurses should utilize salutogenic oriented approach in psychiatry nursing interventions to strengthen the mental health which will help to percolate evidence based nursing.
