<p>The increasing demand for mental health services in the United Kingdom has strained inpatient care systems, leading to longer lengths of stay and reliance on out-of-area placements. This study evaluates the implementation of a 72-h care planning meeting model within an acute admissions inpatient setting at a large NHS mental health trust in the East of England. The model aims to improve patient care through enhanced service integration, early and safer discharges, and reduce reliance on out-of-area placements, made possible by multidisciplinary team collaboration. The 72-h care planning meetings, held within the first 72&#xa0;h of admission, involve all relevant professionals, including community services, crisis teams, ward multi-disciplinary teams, and statutory and voluntary agencies, ensuring comprehensive assessments and coordinated care plans from the outset. This multidisciplinary approach addresses multiple aspects of a patient’s needs, reducing miscommunication and errors that can lead to extended stays and fragmented care. By prioritizing comprehensive care planning within the first 72&#xa0;h, the model fosters a proactive approach to discharge planning, facilitating timely and safe discharges by identifying and addressing potential clinical and social barriers early. The implementation has shown promising outcomes in maintaining a short length of stay that aligns with NHS operational targets and improving patient and carer satisfaction. This study highlights the potential for broader application of the 72-h care planning meeting model in mental health services to optimize patient care delivery and resource utilization.</p>
