Investigation on Surface Science and Cell Viability of Laser Micro Engraved DMLS TI64 Alloy

A direct metal laser sintering process is used to develop the titanium base alloy for implant applications. A heat treatment plan with a temperature 720 °C for 8 h and 620 °C for 8 h followed by furnace cooling are made for a double ageing process. from the ageing process the anisotropic structure developed due to rapid cooling found to be homogenised in structure. The mechanical properties found to be increased from 955 MPa as build material to 965 MPa after double aging process. A dimple profile is engraved on the as built and heat treated DMLS alloy using the laser surface texturing. Heat source generated on the laser surface has induced the textured layer to produce oxide and carbide formation. The surface hardness has been increased to 378 HV for heat treated alloy. Further the cell viability of the samples is studied to report the quality of the material and recommendations are made from the analysis.
