<p>The analyses of the roughness determination by sequential linear profiles increment are unknown. Objectives: To compare the roughness values of one to seven linear profiles models with an eight-linear profile model; to test the correlation of the eight linear profile models with its respective texture data; and to evaluate the agreement between one and seven linear profiles models with an eight-linear profile model over human root dentin. Dentin specimens were randomly analyzed by three-dimensional optical profilometer. Five linear and areal roughness parameters were used. The model one was determined by a single vertical trace in the middle of the specimen until model eight (three vertical traces, three horizontal traces, and two diagonals). The addition of linear traces over dentin did not result in roughness values changes. Roughness values obtained as a result of four traces or more covering part of the dentin specimen surface were correlated to texture pattern data (<i>p</i> &lt; 0.05). The majority of the measurements were found between the upper and the lower limits of agreement. The roughness values of one single vertical trace in the middle of the dentin block were similar to the roughness values obtained as a result of eight traces covering the whole surface of dentin specimen. When the association of linear roughness parameters is desired for assessing the relation to texture pattern, model composed by four traces onwards is recommended. A single vertical trace would be appropriate for use in profile roughness determination with good agreement over dentin.</p>
