Review of Oxidant Corrosion Inhibition in Petroleum Engineering

Oxidants are increasingly being employed in the petroleum engineering industry, primarily for the removal of wellbore blockages, prevention of bacterial growth, and degradation of polymers. However, due to its high level of oxidation, it can readily result in the corrosion of pipe columns, transportation, and manufacturing equipment, and may even precipitate safety-related incidents. The text provides a detailed examination of the interaction between different oxidants and corrosion inhibitors, with particular emphasis on the corrosion mechanism of oxidants. The results indicate that oxidants such as persulfate, peroxides, and chlorinated oxidants can partially inhibit metal corrosion. Corrosion inhibitors has the potential to effectively halt corrosion, achieving a corrosion inhibition rate of over 80%. When combined with other chemical agents, certain oxidants, such as permanganate, bichromate, and nitrate, exhibit strong oxidizing properties and also demonstrate some corrosion inhibition, thereby yielding a beneficial effect. Numerous studies have been carried out on oxidant corrosion, with limited emphasis on its corrosion inhibitors. Therefore, in the context of addressing the issue of corrosion in oxidizers, it is beneficial to consolidate information on corrosion inhibitors and their formulations from relevant research on each oxidizer. This can facilitate the identification of suitable preventive measures. To prevent or minimize corrosion and engineering failures, it is essential to improve the service life of the steel through corrosion suppression engineering.
