Advancing civil engineering education: a systematic review of opportunities, trends, challenges, and future research directions in immersive digital technologies

The complexity of civil engineering demands innovative educational tools that bridge the gap between theory and practice. Immersive digital technologies provide immersive, interactive environments to support these needs. However, civil engineering education lags behind other disciplines in adopting these technologies. This study conducts a systematic review of 359 relevant studies from a total of 1508 published between 2014 and 2023, using a nine-step Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) based methodology that includes keyword optimization, statistical analysis, and thematic mapping. The findings reveal that 74% of the studies report measurable improvements in student performance, assessed through enhanced test scores, faster task completion, and improved design accuracy. Key opportunities identified include enhanced 3D visualization, higher learner engagement, and the development of practical construction skills. Artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies emerge as growing integrations within immersive digital technologies systems, AI-enhanced augmented reality improves site inspection accuracy by 36%, while IoT-linked virtual environments deliver dynamic, real-time simulations. In contrast to other disciplines, such as aerospace or mechanical engineering, which use immersive digital technologies for modeling complex systems, civil engineering applications focus on virtual construction, safety training, and structural analysis. Major challenges include high implementation costs (affecting 68% of cases), inadequate educator training (reported in 54%), and limited institutional infrastructure (41%). Additionally, 95% of studies overlook important ethical and psychological considerations, such as cybersecurity risks and the long-term effects of virtual reality exposure. Future directions include cost-effective immersive digital technologies solutions, improved educator training, interdisciplinary collaborations, and a focus on ethical and cybersecurity concerns. Addressing the long-term psychological impacts of immersive digital technologies also remains imperative.
