Decisions, decisions: The impact of a group mentoring program on adolescents’ decision-making skills
摘要
As youth transition into high school, they are faced with increased autonomy and opportunities for decision-making regarding their behaviors, relationships, activities, and how they spend their time (Messman et al., 2022). Acquiring the knowledge and skills for youth to adequately handle their decisions may be beneficial for their long-term development. The Youth Education Programs (YEPs) are group mentoring, after-school programs for grade 7 students; the programs were developed to support youth in their social and emotional development and equip them with skills necessary to successfully navigate the high school transition process. The current study employed a two-group quasi-experimental design to evaluate the impact of the YEPs on adolescents’ responsible decision-making skills. Overall, results indicate that the YEPs had minimal impacts at post-test (n = 674); however, youth who participated in the YEPs reported a significant increase in decision-making skills after transitioning to high school at follow-up (n = 197). Although limitations with respect to attrition are discussed, the follow-up findings provide promising support for the YEP goal to support youth during the high school transition. Future research should investigate program components more closely to determine if modifications to the program content can better influence the development of responsible decision-making.
