Matching the Preparation of School Mental Health Providers to Rural Communities
摘要
Rural communities have struggled with severe shortages of school mental health professionals for decades, despite significant mental health needs among rural students. School Psychology and School Counseling training programs have historically attempted to mitigate the shortage by making graduate training programs accessible to and less costly for rural residents without requiring them to relocate to urban campuses. Rural preparation programs must also address the specific challenges of school mental health practice in rural communities. This survey examined these unique training needs by gathering rural school mental health practitioners’ perceptions of advantages and disadvantages of rural school practice in Nebraska, and by collecting their recommendations for ways that a graduate training program could address rural shortages and support rural school mental health practices.
