摘要

As an active means of transport for commuting to work, cycling brings numerous health benefits for commuters as a result of increased physical activity. The health benefits can be compromised due to enhanced exposure to traffic-related air pollutants, such as carbon monoxide, particularly in urban areas. In relation to passive transport by car, bus or train, pedestrians and particularly cyclists experience an increased uptake of carbon monoxide because of intensified breathing associated with the proximity to motorized traffic. The aim of this review article is to summarize the most relevant literature with data on the carbon monoxide exposure of cyclists in urban areas. Considering different transport options and routes, insights can be gained into the relative exposure to pollutants and the associated health risks. The health and environmental advantages of active commuting on foot or by cycling and the findings from air pollution research can support policy decisions in urban transport planning to create the infrastructure for safe and healthy cycling.
