The manifestation and impact of the concept of “Three Yi” in the book of changes in the international dissemination of Chinese ethnic music: a case study of works from “Looking China Youth Film Project”

The Book of Changes (Yi Jing), known as the cornerstone of Chinese culture, boasts extensive and rich content covering various fields such as politics, economics, and culture, exerting profound influence on the social development throughout China’s long history. In this ancient civilization, ethnic music serves as the carrier of national emotions and the bond of cultural heritage. From the the three sections in the Book of Songs to the folk songs of the collection of poems of yuefu, Chinese ethnic music, with its unique charm, reflects the characteristics of the times and the spiritual pursuits of the people in different historical periods. The Five Pitches Gong Shang Jue Zhi Yu in ethnic music, resembling the Eight Diagrams in the Book of Changes, contains the laws of changes in all things in the world, conveying the aspirations of the Chinese nation for a better life and the expectations for a harmonious society. In this process, it is essential to delve into the historical, cultural, and philosophical values inherent in ethnic music and integrate the dissemination of ethnic music with international communication. This paper attempts to integrate the concept of the “Three Yi” in the Book of Changes with the path of international dissemination of Chinese ethnic music, taking the works from “Looking China Project” as an example, to explore the essence of ancient Chinese philosophical thoughts deeply, thereby providing theoretical guidance for the research on the inheritance and dissemination path of ethnic music.
