<p>In recent years, there has been a shift in the terminology regarding liver pathology, from NAFLD to MAFLD, and most recently to MASLD. In some aspects, these conditions overlap, and insulin resistance, primarily present in diabetic and obese patients, represents an important transversal pathogenic factor. NAFLD/MASLD can be associated not only with metabolic alterations but also with other endocrinopathies, such as hypothyroidism. Anthropometric parameters and certain routine biochemical tests allow the calculation of scores in the clinical context, designed to recognise hepatic steatosis and identify patients at risk of fibrosis in a non-invasive manner. Finally, pharmacotherapy for liver disease is undergoing rapid evolution and will likely soon allow intervention in the still reversible stages of damage.</p>
