Farmaci innovativi per il trattamento dell’obesità

A new era of obesity treatments is approaching the effectiveness of bariatric surgery, currently the best strategy for weight loss and its maintenance. Recent is the development of drugs such as injectable semaglutide 2.4 mg, just released in Italy, which induces a 15–17% weight loss and offers cardioprotection. In the pipeline are oral GLP-1 agonists with similar efficacy, and future therapies will combine GLP-1 with hormones such as GIP, glucagon, and amylin. Tirzepatide, a GLP-1/GIP agonist, has shown even greater weight loss efficacy than semaglutide and is nearing commercialisation in Italy. Other promising molecules will follow in the near future.
