Embedding an Autism-Friendly Hospital Initiative into a Pediatric Healthcare Enterprise
摘要
Pediatric healthcare settings often reflect neurotypical norms, leaving autistic patients to conform, comply, and adjust their behavior to meet the expectations of medical staff. The Autism-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a hospital-wide system designed to offer equitable, accessible, and comfortable medical care for autistic patients and patients with similar neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD). This initiative is an example of a hospital-wide system where: (a) pediatric autistic patients and their caregivers are supported and accommodated; (b) individualized adapted care plans based on behavioral principles are embedded into electronic medical records; and (c) clinicians become knowledgeable and confident in working with autistic and NDD youth.
